Song

Embers

Embers is a prayer that recognises our own weakness, frailty and failings but lifts them confidently up to God with the plea: ‘Restore me to the joy of salvation!’

Resources

When the light dims
And my love grows cold
When the grace that astounded
Seems colourless and old
Jesus I know your love’s the same
But my fire has faded
Come and kindle it again

Take these embers
Take this heart that grows faint
Holy Spirit reignite a mighty flame
I remember
When your love and mercy came
Mighty River flood this heart of mine again

See these thorns lord
They ensnare my heart
And the fruit that abounded
Now withers on the branch
Jesus I turn from cisterns dry
To the living waters
Of your perfect sacrifice

Take these embers…

Restore me to the joy of salvation
Teach me to taste your love again
Lead me in the way I’ve forsaken
O come again to reign!

Take these embers…

If Christ is Mine (Live)

If Christ is mine celebrates the sufficiency of Christ for the believer. We are united with him in all his fullness – all of Christ is all of ours. He is enough.

This recording was made at Word Alive 2023

Resources

If Christ is mine I need no more
He is the greatest gift of all
The one who angel hosts adore
Now has me safely in his hold
His life my life! His death my death!
All mine his every righteous breath!
‘My precious child!’ the father cries
When all of Christ is all of mine!

If Christ is mine my guilt is gone
It died with Him upon the tree
The weight of sin I held so long
Was laid on Jesus there for me
O sweet forgiveness! Precious peace!
Condemned no more! My soul is free!
My weary burden cast aside!
When all of Christ is all of mine!

If Christ is mine I will not fear
Though many stand against his name
Above their noise his voice is clear
‘Behold! I’ve overcome the grave!’
My living lord! My risen king!
What’s left to fear if I’m with him?
For death is swallowed up in life
When all of Christ is all of mine!

What joy to know that Christ is mine!
Who holds me ever in his love
The sure foundation of my life
Whose grace will always be enough!
Though all I have is stripped away
Still I rejoice for Christ remains!
And when he comes he’ll lift me high
For all of Christ is all of mine!

Journey's End

“No man ever need despair of reaching his journey’s end if he has once committed his soul to Christ’s keeping”

J.C. Ryle

Expository thoughts, Mark 4v35-41

Resources

Come weary traveller fix your hope
Upon your journey’s end,
When unrestrained, his grace will pay
For every labour spent.
Though now you toil soon shall you rest;
Though now you must contend,
You soon shall be forever blessed
Upon your journey’s end

See Christ, his journey’s end in mind,
Ascending Calvary’s hill;
For heaven’s joy endured the cross
And bears your burdens still;
See perfect love and innocence
By all the world condemned;
Yet gladly bore the shame that you
Might reach your journey’s end

Praise to the God of grace!
O what a sure and glorious hope!
He all our strength and praise
As we make our journey home

What storms you’ll weather, trials endure,
Lie far beyond your sight;
Yet anxious traveller rest secure:
You’ll soon be home with Christ!
He walks with you through fearful days,
Your sure and faithful friend;
And soon you’ll see his smiling face
Upon your journey’s end

Praise to the God of grace!

Come weary traveller fix your hope
Upon your journey’s end;
When crowds of angels cheer you home,
And God himself descends:
‘My good and faithful servant come
You journeyed long and hard;
Now everlasting joy is yours
My child you’re home at last.’

Praise to the God of grace!

We cry to you today!
Have mercy Lord Jesus!
Have mercy on us Lord, we pray.

Lord we pray for peace
Where lives are torn apart
Hope of every nation
Restore each broken heart
Jesus Rock and Refuge
Comfort those who flee
Master of the raging storm
We pray to you for peace

Where fear is all around
May your love enfold us
May faith and hope abound
Jesus lord and victor
Come and set us free
Saviour who has crushed the grave
We pray to you for peace

Song

Jesus, Saviour

There are many names and titles for Jesus in the Bible. This song is a meditation on three of them: saviour, shepherd, king. In each verse we pray that Jesus will be a faithful shepherd, saviour and king to us, and that we would respond in faith and obedience.

Some key biblical references/allusions include Romans 5:6-9, Mark 5:41, Psalm 23, John 10, Romans 1:5, John 8:44.

Resources

Jesus, Saviour, be for me
My strength, my sure defence;
May your blood forever be
My only righteousness.
Helpless, hopeless, bound by sin
Until you set me free;
Took my hand and raised me up
From death to life and peace!

Oh Jesus!
You’re the lover of my soul.
Oh Jesus!
Jesus be my all in all.

Jesus, Shepherd, be for me
My help, my way, my guide;
May your word forever lead
To springs of endless life.
Faint and weary, lost and blind
Without your guiding hand;
You are mighty, good and kind
Secure with You I stand.

Oh Jesus!
You’re the lover of my soul.
Oh Jesus!
Jesus be my all in all.

Jesus, master, be for me
My King, my lord of all!
May my footsteps ever be
Obedient to your call.
Sure to follow Satan’s lies
Without your loving rule.
May your word forever bind
My thankful heart to you!

Oh Jesus!
You’re the lover of my soul.
Oh Jesus!
Jesus be my all in all.

O the Kindness

This song is directed to God the Father as a celebration of his goodness to us. Each verse is an expression of wonder at God’s kindness, goodness and love, with the responsive chorus singing out our heartfelt thanks to him.

Biblical references/allusions include Psalm 29:5, James 1:17, Psalm 33:6, Psalm 23, Romans 8:32, Matthew 3:17, Mark 15:34, 1 John 3:1, Hebrews 12:29, Exodus 34:14, 2 Corinthians 5:2-3, Romans 8:23.

Resources

O the kindness of our Father
Lavish generosity!
Power and goodness bound together
To provide our every need!
Though your voice breaks mighty cedars
Calls from nothing all to be!
Every word now gently leads us
To the pastures rich and green

Thank you father
Your love is all we need
Thank you father!
For loving even me

O the goodness of our Father
Sparing not the Son you loved-
He who brought eternal pleasure-
For the guilty given up!
Is it true he hung forsaken
Bearing righteous wrath for us?
Enemies now made your children
Lavished with your perfect love!

Thank you father…

O the love of God our Father
Burns for us with holy zeal!
Jealous for our full devotion
Till your glory is revealed.
May our hearts beat holy passion
Yearning for our home above
Where at last redeemed, adopted
We’ll forever know your love

Thank you father…

Song

Gentle and Lowly

Gentle and Lowly is inspired by Dane Ortlund’s book of the same title. At the start of that book he says,

“In the four gospel accounts given to us in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John – eighty-nine chapters of biblical text- there’s only one place where Jesus tells us about his own heart”. That place is Matthew 11:28-29:

Come to me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Taking its theme from the book, this song is a meditation and celebration of the heart of Christ for sinners and sufferers like us.

Resources

Gentle and lowly, patient and kind
Ever approachable saviour of mine
All of my weakness meets your embrace,
Failure and sin meet compassion and grace
Gentle and lowly! Patient and kind!
Ever approachable saviour of mine!

Seeing my suffering, knowing my fear
Mercy compels you in love to draw near
Joy without measure flows through your soul
Taking my burdens and bearing them all!
Seeing my suffering, knowing my fear
Mercy compels you in love to draw near!

Humble redeemer there on the tree
Nothing could stop you from suffering for me
Speechless in wonder, angels above
Never had seen such self-emptying love!
Humble redeemer there on the tree
Nothing could stop you from suffering for me

Gentle and lowly, patient and kind
No other saviour like Jesus I find
Though my heart changes, yours never does
Ever unchanging compassion and love!
Gentle and lowly, patient and kind
No other saviour like Jesus I find
No other saviour like Jesus I find

Not Unto Us

Not unto us is a meditation on psalm 115:1

“Not to us, Lord, not to us
but to your name be the glory,
because of your love and faithfulness.”

The congregation sings these words in each chorus as a response to each verse which reflects on a different area where all the glory belongs to God rather than us: creation (v1), redemption (v2), and persevering as a believer (v3). Other biblical allusions in the song include, Ps. 139:1, 13-15; Ps. 51:6; 1 Cor. 4:7; Gen 1:16; Luke 19:10; 1 Cor 15:10; 2 Tim. 2:1-6

All the glory, Lord to You!
For in the secret place
Each life you fashioned through and through
In fearful wonder made!
What have we but given by you?
To our God all honour due!
You who also made the stars
Yours the glory never ours

Not unto us, not unto us
But all the glory unto you!
For your great love and faithfulness
We give the glory all to you!

Though the world may praise our deeds
You search much deeper in
You see our pride you see our greed,
You see our darkest sin
You the seeker, we the lost
Ours the sin, and yours the cross
Yours the love that took our place
Yours the glory, ours the grace!

Not unto us….!

Hopeless lies the road ahead
If in our strength we go
Our only hope to run the course
Is in your strength alone
Every battle every race
Won by your empowering grace
When our fearful faith is small
God of grace you give us all!

Not unto us….!

Take me to that ancient hill

“Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). There they crucified him, and with him two others — one on each side and Jesus in the middle.”

John 19:17-18

Play Video

The classic hymn ‘There is a green hill far away’ takes us in our mind’s eye to Golgotha, the hill where Jesus died. Taking up the theme, this song expresses our daily need to be taken to the cross as the place where our guilt and shame are taken away, and our enemy, Satan, is defeated: “But there my wounded victor stood and crushed the serpent’s head that day”.

Key themes for use at church:

the cross, Easter, grace, forgiveness, discipleship, communion, consecration.

Resources

Take me to that ancient hill
For towering waves of guilt engulf
But there your steadfast mercy still
Is certain as your wounds of love

Take me to that sacred tree
For weary loads of shame oppress
But there you bore it all for me
And give me life and joy and rest

There I stand in awe
At your love for me
Give my life and all
At the cross of Calvary

Take me to that splintered wood
For still the Tempter leads astray
But there my wounded victor stood
And crushed the serpent’s head that day

There I stand in awe…

Take me to that ancient hill
And stay there all my earthly days
Rejoicing in your love until
I join with heaven’s eternal praise

There I stand in awe…

February 2021
Churches in the UK haven’t sung together for almost a year.
Over 100 people from more than 70 churches partnered with Joyful Noise to bring this modern hymn to life.

Key themes for use at church:

Cross, Forgiveness, Love, Communion, Consecration

Resources

Your cross, O Lord, taught me to see
That though I fail you every day
Your steadfast love will not fail me
But gladly bears my sin away.
And there I see your holy fire
Consuming sin in mercy’s blood:
What righteousness and love require
To ransom sinners to their God.

Your cross, O Lord, taught me to weep
For there my sin led you away
And e’en the sun did bow in grief
As darkness crowned our darkest day.
And oh, to think that I once stood
Indifferent to your suffering!
And oh, to see your sweat like blood:
Such depths of sorrow borne for me!

Your cross, O Lord, taught me to love
For there I’ve tasted love divine,
It fills my heart with power enough
To make your costly service mine.
No sin too great to meet with grace,
No enemy too foul to bless.
Your love in wounds of sacrifice;
Teach me, O Lord, to love like this.

Your cross, O Lord, taught me to sing
For now my captive soul is free!
No guilt, no fear, no suffering
Can tear away your love from me!
No song can reach such heights of joy!
No tongue can tell such depths of peace!
No power, no time, can e’er destroy
The eternal praise for Calvary!

Song

Come People of God

Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus…let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience… Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.

He’s paid for the sin
Of each one who will come!

Lord of all we come!
Holy of holies, glorious God!
Praising all you’ve done!
Brought near by the blood of Jesus

Come saints of the Lord
Lift your hearts to the day
When life is restored
And when death flees away
With hope burning bright
Look ahead and press on
Fear not for the night
Will soon turn to the dawn

Lord of all we come!

Come saints old and young
For together we go
The race to be run
Can’t be triumphed alone
This family of ours
By his grace we are one!
His love in our hearts
His salvation our song

Lord of all we come!

Comfort and Joy

But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.

Luke 2:10–11

When the Church of England announced their advent theme for 2020 as “Comfort and Joy”, we decided to get on board with by writing a song on that theme. With the Covid-19 pandemic as the backdrop, this song traces why the good news of Jesus’ birth brings lasting comfort and joy. It climaxes with Jesus’ promised return: “every longing then fulfilled, every storm forever stilled!” Comfort and joy indeed!

Key themes for use at church:

Advent, Christmas

Resources

Hear the songs of angels rise
Through dark and troubled skies
The sound of glory
Bringing tidings of great joy
No sorrow can destroy
Salvation’s story
To our world of grief and pain
God stepped down on Christmas day

Comfort and joy! Comfort and joy!
Hope has dawned
With the newborn boy
Comfort and joy! Comfort and joy!
Come and join with the angel song! Rejoice!

Unto us a son is born
The light of life has dawned
The hope of nations
All our tears will fill his soul
Yet gladly bears them all
Our great salvation
Every sin borne at the cross
Risen now he walks with us

Comfort and joy! Comfort and joy!…

Soon he’ll wipe our tears away
In ever brighter day
His glory shining
Angels fill the air once more
‘Come worship and adore!
The lord is reigning!’
Every longing then fulfilled
Every storm forever stilled!

Comfort and joy! Comfort and joy!…

Your reach is further
Your promise sure
Lord our God, is there anything too hard for you?

Is anyone too lost for you
Whose heart is love divine?
Rejoicing when the lost return
You came to seek and find
Your cross lights up the way
Back home to you today
O lord is anyone too lost for you?

Is anywhere too dark for you
Who speaks and light appears?
Exposing evil bringing hope

The darkest night will be
Your brightest victory!

Jesus I will walk with you
Attentive to your voice
In every written word you speak
And make my heart rejoice
Though now I walk an unseen road
In prayer I know your peace
And walk with persevering faith
For Jesus walks with me

Jesus I will walk with you
The way of victory
The stranglehold of sin is gone
Your blood has set me free
And though my sin is deep and dark
Your spirit’s power will be
My daily strength to walk with you

Key themes for use at church:

Resurrection, Easter, suffering and death, hope.

Resources

No greater hope in life than this:
where death had slain, He lies no more.
No greater peace, for I am His;
He’ll lead me where He’s gone before.

Hallelujah! Praise the risen Lord!
Hallelujah! I am His!
Sting of death removed forever more:
no greater hope in life than this.

No greater hope in life than this:
my sin is paid, my guilt is gone.
His sacrifice, my confidence;
His risen life, my victory song.

Hallelujah! Praise the risen Lord…

No greater hope in life than this:
the firstfruits of a multitude,
His risen life, a gracious gift
and all who come will be renewed.

Hallelujah! Praise the risen Lord…

No greater hope in life than this,
a hope no sorrow can remove
for Jesus lives and I am His
and none can take me from His love.

Hallelujah! Praise the risen Lord…

Is anything too hard for you
Whose name is majesty?
A word creates a breath destroys
The greatest enemy
You never tire or sleep
Your hands are strong to keep
O lord is anything too hard for you?

Your strength is stronger
Your love is more
Your reach is further
Your promise sure
Lord our God, is there anything too hard for you?

Is anyone too lost for you
Whose heart is love divine?
Rejoicing when the lost return
You came to seek and find
Your cross lights up the way
Back home to you today
O lord is anyone too lost for you?

Your strength….

Is anywhere too dark for you
Who speaks and light appears?
Exposing evil bringing hope
And driving out all fear
The darkest night will be
Your brightest victory!
O lord is anywhere too dark for you?

Your strength…
